"Okay, Mulder, spill," Scully said, turning in her chair.

"What do you mean?" I looked up innocently from my computer.

"At least ten times already this morning I've had the distinct
impression that you were going to say something, but then you
changed your mind," she explained.

It was frightening how well Scully knew me. I hadn't even
opened my mouth. She'd even had her back to me. There was no
point lying, she'd see right through that. She'd witnessed me
lying so many times that she recognizes it instantly. I know,
I've tried.

"Actually, I didn't want to say something, I wanted to ask you
something," I admitted.

"Mulder, you've never been afraid to ask me anything. What is it?"

Deciding that it would be better to just get it over with, I
blurted out my question.

Scully's face melted into a smile. "What am I doing tonight? you
were afraid to ask me what I am doing tonight?"

Trying to ignore the fact that my ears felt like they were
burning, I shrugged.

"Would saying that I was planning to wash my hair be the wrong
answer?" she asked, grinning.

"Scully!" I whined, but I guess the high school put off was a
fair comeback to my high school approach.

"I didn't have any specific plans tonight, Mulder. Just the
usual: something to eat, some reading, a bath and then out like a
light by 10:30. Why?"

"Never mind, you have plans. It's not important," I said with a
wave of my hand.

She snorted, "Those aren't plans, Mulder! That's called filling
time. Were you just taking a survey, or did you actually have
something in mind?"

"I just wondered if you were free for dinner?" I was no longer
looking at her. She wouldn't want to have dinner with me. I mean,
she was forced to eat with me often enough as it was. Why would
she want to eat with me on her own time?

"I think I already said that I was free for dinner, Mulder,"
she said gently.

"Really?" I finally looked up. She was smiling softly at me.
"Would you let me cook for you?"

Her eyebrows flew up, "You want to cook for me?"

"We could go out if you'd prefer," I backpedaled quickly.

"No, Mulder, I'm just surprised that you want to cook for me. You
don't even cook for yourself."

"Cooking for one is a drag," I pointed out.

"True," she agreed. "I'd be delighted to have you cook for me,
Mulder. The only other person who has ever cooked for me is my
mother."

"Oh sure, set impossibly high standards for me to meet," I
laughed.

"I'm sure you'll do fine, Mulder." She was smiling at me again.
"So what time is this feast?"

"Um, I hadn't thought that far ahead. 7:30?" I ventured.

"Sounds good! Are we dressing for dinner?"

"I'll probably be dressed, but if you want to eat in the buff, I
won't complain," I grinned, feeling much more at ease.

With a sigh, she rolled her eyes at me and turned back to the
file that she had been working on. I was feeling very pleased
with myself. Scully had actually agreed to let me cook for her.

The contented feeling drained away quickly as soon as I
remembered the state of my apartment, not to mention that I had
no idea what I was going to cook, or what I was going to cook it
with.

"Hey, Scully?" I spoke up a couple of minutes later, "I'm going
to cut out. I have some stuff to do, okay?"

"Mulder, don't feel that you have to go to any trouble..."

"Scully," I interrupted her. "I want to go to some trouble. That's
the whole point."

As I slipped my jacket back on, she just stared at me wide-eyed.

"So, I'll see you at 7:30," I confirmed as I opened the office
door.

"7:30," she nodded, her eyes still wide.

It was quite an accomplishment to surprise Scully. I was feeling
quite proud of myself.

Since I had absolutely no idea what I should cook, I decided to
get some advice. When I walked into Skinner's outer office,
Kimberly spoke up immediately.

"Agent Mulder, you should have called. A.D. Skinner is in
meetings all day."

"That's okay, Kimberly. It was you that I wanted to talk to,
anyway," I smiled.

"Me?"

I had to chuckle, I was doing a pretty good job at surprising
women today.

"I need some advice," I told her.

"Okay," she said hesitantly.

"I'm cooking for a friend tonight and I have no idea what I
should make."

"A friend?" The corners of her mouth curved up as she repeated my
words.

"Yup," I nodded.

"Well, that depends. Will this friend care if you have garlic
breath or spinach in your teeth?" Her smile was now full-blown.

"I hope so," I confessed.

"Okay. Then I suggest that you make something light, like lemon
chicken."

"Lemon chicken, that sounds good. How do I make that?"

She laughed and shook her head. "Do you cook much, Agent Mulder?"

"Not really," I admitted.

"Well, my recipe is easy. I got it off of the internet and I
think I still have the site bookmarked. Just give me a sec." She
began to click her mouse rapidly. "And don't tell Skinner about
this. He'd have my ass if he knew I was surfing the net at
work."

"Mum's the word," I promised.

Seconds later the laser printer whirred into action. The recipe
that Kimberly printed out came complete with a picture. I
strongly doubted that whatever I managed to come up with would
end up looking anything like that picture. Scanning the recipe to
see what I would need, it seemed Kimberly was right; it looked
fairly easy. I just hoped I wouldn't screw it up somehow.

"White wine," Kimberly answered a question that I hadn't thought
to ask. "Dry."

I nodded. I could remember that.

"And a salad with a light vinaigrette to start would be nice, as
well," she added.

"Vinaigrette?"

She chuckled and began to click away with her mouse again.

Soon, with Kimberly's assistance, I was all set. She even told me
which market to go to, the name of a good wine and where I could
find it.

"Thank you, Kimberly. I owe you one or ten," I smiled.

"Just let me know if Agent Scully likes it," she smiled.

I was nodding, okay, before I could stop myself. She must have
seen a look of panic cross my face.

"Don't worry, I won't tell anyone," she winked at me.

"Thanks, I don't know what Skinner would do if he got wind of
this," I breathed a sigh of relief.

"I wouldn't worry about it," she leaned closer to me,
conspiratorially, "He already thinks that you two are involved.
He keeps asking me what I think."

"What do you say?" It was my turn to be wide-eyed with surprise.

"I tell him that I haven't seen anything to indicate that you are
romantically involved. I can sense that kind of thing. You two
give off a different vibe."

"What kind of vibe?" I was curious.

"The air almost crackles with the energy that both of you give
off. If you were involved, I think that energy would, well,
dissipate. But Skinner is still convinced that you're involved,"
she shrugged.

"Then why hasn't he said anything?" I was puzzled.

"None of his business what you do on your own time. You know the
policy - no consorting on Bureau time," she pointed out.

"I should talk to you more often, Kimberly. You are a fountain of
information."

"Not much gets past me, except you, occasionally," she laughed.

I gave her an apologetic smile before thanking her again for the
recipes.

As I was heading to my car, I laid out my plan: first to the
market for the food, then to the specialty wine store that
Kimberly had suggested, then home to clean the apartment and
then myself. If all went as planned I would start cooking at 5.
That would leave me plenty of time to prepare everything.

By 4 o'clock my apartment was even cleaner than it had been when
I returned from area 51. I, on the other hand, was feeling
extremely grimy. It was strange how cleaning left you feeling so
dirty.

Stripping off, I climbed into a steamy shower. I stood there for a
long time, just letting the hot water spill over me. Then, not
knowing how long I'd just been standing there I moved quickly,
washing my hair and then the rest of me. As I washed my face, I
felt the roughness of the stubble of my beard against my palms,
so I decided to shave as well.

As planned, at 5 o'clock I was in the kitchen, ready to cook. By
7 the chicken was simmering in the skillet, the rice was steaming,
the salad and vinaigrette were made and the wine was chilling.

After I set the table, eventually deciding that I would go with
the candles, I went to get changed. What, exactly, did one wear
to dinner in one's own home. I decided to go with a pair of
beige chinos, a white shirt and a navy v-neck sweater. I was still
looking in the mirror, not satisfied with my appearance, when I
heard Scully's knock.

When I got to the door I took a deep breath before opening it.
From the amused look on Scully's face, I think my jaw must have
dropped when I saw her.

She had done something different with her hair, because soft
curls were falling around her face. Her makeup was expertly
applied as always, but she seemed even more radiant than I was
used to. She, too, was wearing pants and a sweater, but she
looked infinitely better in her sweater than I did in mine.

The sweater was light blue cashmere with a scoop neck. It
buttoned up the front, and the top two buttons were undone. Much
to my delight, she was wearing a push-up bra. I knew what Scully
looked like naked, and au natural, the tops of her breasts did
not curve like that.

"You look great, Scully," I finally found my voice, silently
hoping that I hadn't left her standing in my doorway too long
while I stared at her. "Come on in."

"Thank you, Mulder. You look nice, too," she smiled and then held
out two bottles of wine; one red, one white. "I wasn't sure what
you were making."

"Chicken," I told her, as I walked into the kitchen. "Would you
like a glass now?"

"Please," she said, following closely behind me.

Suddenly I wondered if Scully ever looked at me the way that I
looked at her. I hoped that my ass looked okay in these pants. I
never think of looking at things like that. I doubt I'd be able
to tell anyway.

After I handed Scully her glass of wine, I put the red wine in
the cupboard. "Want to know something funny, Scully?" I asked
as I picked up my glass.

"What's that?" She asked politely, smiling.

"You bought the same white wine that I did."

"Really?" She laughed. "You know your wine, Mulder."

"Not really," I confessed, "I had to ask for help."

"You had good help, then."

"Mmm, I did," I nodded. "I know that this is bad form, but the
food is ready now. Do you want to eat?"

"Don't worry about etiquette with me, Mulder. I'd love to eat,
I'm starving. I only had a light lunch and then I didn't eat
anything when I got home. I didn't want to spoil my dinner," she
explained.

"Come and sit, then," I held her chair, "I'll get the salad," I
told her as I slid her chair in.

"Do you mind if I toss the vinaigrette in with salad, or do you
want to add your own?" I called from the kitchen.

"No, go ahead, Mulder, that's fine," she answered.

When I returned with the salad bowl, I served Scully and then
myself before I sat down.

She waited until I had picked up my fork before she began.
Spearing some lettuce and tomato, I took the first bite. Scully
followed suit, taking a smaller amount than I had. When I began
to chew, my eyes flew open. I swallowed quickly.

"It's gritty, Scully, I'm sorry. I thought I washed everything
thoroughly," I apologized.

She took a sip of her wine and then smiled broadly at me.

"Calm down, Mulder. That's just the herbs in the vinaigrette."

"Oh," I grinned sheepishly, "So, it's okay?"

"Very good, the vinaigrette is very nice. Where'd you get the
recipe?"

"Off of the internet," I told her a half truth.

"What did we do before we had the net?" Scully shook her head.

"I'd be using bottled dressing," I admitted. I'd been tempted to
say something about naked pictures, but decided against it.

Not knowing what else to talk about, I asked Scully how the rest
of her day had gone. We ate our salad as she told me about the
IT guy who had come down to install some new software on our
computers. Apparently he'd been relieved that "Spooky" Mulder
wasn't there, but had still been intimidated by Scully's
no-nonsense reputation. She was laughing as she recounted
how he'd tiptoed around her.

"Poor guy, he probably has a crush on you," I told her.

"Well, pussyfooting around me is the wrong way to get my
attention. I like a man who's a little more decisive," she
laughed. "Besides, he was a bit young for my taste."

"So you like older, decisive men, Scully?" I grinned at her.

"I do," she returned my grin.

"Sounds like Skinner would be perfect for you," I suggested.

"He's too authoritative, too much like my father," she grimaced.

I nodded, giving her my best "I see" face.

"Shut up, Mulder," she laughed.

I remember you telling me how you kissed him in the elevator," I
pointed out.

"That was only because he helped me find *you*," she countered.

"You didn't kiss me when you found me," I pouted.

"Then, I guess I owe you one," she smiled sweetly, making my
heart skip a beat.

"I guess so," I tried to sound nonchalant, but my voice cracked
and betrayed me. "Are you ready for the main course?" I asked
quickly, trying to recover my calm exterior.

She nodded in response.

Preparing the plates in the kitchen, I topped the rice with the
lemon-glazed chicken and vegetables. The plates looked
surprisingly like the picture, I just hoped it tasted alright.

When I put Scully's plate down in front of her, I noticed that
her wine was almost empty.

"Would you like some more wine?" I asked as I set my plate down.

"Yes, please," she smiled up at me, this time making my knees
weak. God, I had it bad.

"Go ahead, dig in" I prompted.

"That would be rude, Mulder."

"You said not to worry about etiquette," I reminded her. "I'll be
right back."

She was gathering some rice and chicken onto her fork as I headed
back into the kitchen to retrieve the wine.

"Oh my God!" I heard her cry as I was walking back with the wine.

"What's the matter?" I asked as I dashed back to the table.

"Sorry, I didn't mean to scare you," she giggled at the look on
my face. "This is fabulous, Mulder. Why haven't you ever told me
that you could cook?"

"I didn't know that I could." I steadied my voice. "I just
followed the recipe," I explained as I filled her glass.

"If good cooking was just following a recipe, everyone could do
it, Mulder," she contradicted.

"Yeah, I guess," I shrugged as I filled my glass as well.

"Well, I'm impressed, Mulder. You can cook for me whenever you
like."

"Thank you, Scully," I smiled as I sat down. Shortly I discovered
that she was right. It was delicious, if I do say so myself. We
both ate quietly for a couple of minutes.

Can I ask you something, Mulder?" Scully finally broke the easy
silence.

My mouth was full, so I nodded.

"What made you want to cook for me, all of a sudden?"

"I was feeling guilty," I admitted after I'd swallowed.

"Guilty? About what?" She looked perplexed.

So I explained how well I'd been treated at the Adderly's while
she was stuck in that hole in southeast D.C.

"You were just doing your job, Mulder," she tried to placate me.

"I know, but I still felt guilty."

"That's sweet," she smiled before she took another mouthful of
chicken.

Scully thought that I was sweet! That was a new one.

"It was the least I could do," I felt my ears growing hot again.
I wondered if Scully knew that my ears got red when I was
embarrassed. Hell, she probably knew what color boxers I was
wearing.

We remained fairly quiet as we finished our food. Scully didn't
leave a grain of rice on her plate.

"That was the best meal I've had in ages," she complimented me as
she put her fork down.

"There's more, if you like," I offered.

"I couldn't eat another bite. I ate way too much as it is," she
patted her stomach.

I could've eaten more, but I decided it might be deleterious to
overindulge. "I bought dessert," I let her know.

"I couldn't, Mulder, maybe later."

Later? There was going to be a later? That was a good sign.

Scully insisted on helping me clean up. I had cleaned most of
the dishes as I went. That was one of the few thing that my mother
had taught me. She'd said it made clean up after dinner a lot
easier.

So, we had the kitchen spotless in no time and then adjourned to the
living room. There was something else that I wanted to ask
Scully, but again I was having trouble working up the nerve. Then
I remembered what she'd said about decisive men, so I forged
ahead.

"What would you say if someone asked you if you had a significant
other?" We were sitting side by side on the couch, and I turned
to look at her.

"You know I don't, Mulder," she rolled her eyes.

"That wasn't my question," I pointed out. "What would you say if
someone asked?"

"Like who?" She wanted to know.

"Someone who you were having a friendly conversation with, but
who didn't know you very well," I clarified for her.

I watched her face as she pondered the question. A few times it
looked like she was going to say something, but then changed her
mind. After a minute or so she finally took a deep breath. "I
think I would change the subject."

"That's a cop out, Scully," I accused her. "So, why wouldn't you
just say no?"

"Because I don't think that's completely true," she explained.

"Then why wouldn't you say yes?" I asked quietly, not willing to
let it go.

"Because I don't think that's completely true, either," she
replied just as quietly as I'd asked. "Why are you asking me
this, Mulder?"

"Because someone asked me that question," I admitted.

"And what did you say?" Scully asked me softly.

"I said 'not in the widely understood definition of that term'."

She nodded her head slowly, but said nothing.

"I'd like to change that, Scully," I told her after a couple of
seconds. "I want to have a significant other in the widely
understood definition." I was looking into her eyes as I spoke.
"Is that what you want, Scully? Do you want it to be completely
true?" My hand had found hers.

"I do, Mulder. I want it to be completely true." Her voice was
just above a whisper.

The words had barely passed over her lips before I was kissing
them. I was startled when she pulled her hand out of mine and I
backed off to look at her. Putting both of her hands around my
neck, she pulled my face close to hers again. Apparently, she
wanted her hands free.

As we continued to kiss, her hands roamed, first through my hair,
then over my shoulders and down my chest. I was mildly surprised
to feel her tugging my shirt out of my pants. It seemed that
Scully was not a shrinking violet in this respect. But Scully was
like that about everything, in for a penny, in for a pound; I
shouldn't have been surprised.

I had moved from her lips to her neck, kissing and nibbling my
way down to her shoulder. She sighed softly across my ear and
ran her hands, which were now under my shirt, lightly across
my chest.

When I reached her shoulder, I straightened up so that I could
look at her. Her hair was tousled and her lipstick was smudged.
She was the most stunning creature that I'd ever seen. She was
watching me look at her. I could feel her eyes following mine as
I lowered them to gaze at her breasts.

With the lightest touch that I could manage, I let my fingertips
run over the curve of her breast that the push-up bra had
created.

"Did you do this for me, Scully?" I met her eyes again.

"Yes,"she whispered as she pulled one of her hands out from under
my shirt. "I hoped that you would like it." She ran her thumb
across my bottom lip.

Grabbing her hand, I placed a soft kiss on her palm. "Like it?"
I chuckled, "Didn't you notice me staring when I opened the
door?"

"Mmm, I did," her voice was husky.

"It was all I could do to stop myself from doing this," I told
her as I leaned forward to kiss the exposed part of both of her
breasts.

Sliding her free hand into my hair again, she sighed as I
continued to lavish attention on her breasts. When I finally
pulled back, her chest was heaving. Her breathing was as ragged
as my own, and we were both still fully dressed. I was about to
rectify that.

"I really like this sweater, Scully, but I'm afraid it's in my
way." My voice sounded different to my ears, lower and raspy. I
wondered if Scully noticed.

I gently undid the third button from the top. "Did you leave
those top two buttons undone for me, too?"

"I did," she answered. Her voice had become even huskier.

I popped the next button.

"Why?" I asked before I pressed my lips to the skin that I'd
revealed.

"I was hoping that you'd do something like this," she confessed.

The next button gave way under my fingers revealing Scully's lacy
black bra. What was it about a black bra that was so damn sexy? I
had no idea, but I didn't linger to muse over that philosophical
question. Instead, I moved on to the next button.

"Were you hoping I'd see this bra?" I asked as I ran my thumb
over her nipple. The way it hardened at my touch added to the
fire that was already burning deep inside of me.

"Yes, " she breathed. "It's part of a set."

Scully had worn matching bra and panties for me. Knowing that she
had wanted this to happen as much as I did was making my head
spin. Consciously stopping myself from ripping off her sweater
and pants to see what she had worn for me, I pushed the next
button through the button hole. Three more to go. I wanted to
keep the pace slow, but it was getting more and more difficult.
The part of me that wanted to tear off both of our clothes and
make fast furious love right here on my leather couch was gaining
ground on the part of me that wanted our first time to be special.
I wanted Scully to remember this.

While I tried to control myself, I gently kissed the warm skin
on her stomach. As I had moved down her body, she'd had to take
her other hand out from under my shirt as well and now both were
in my hair.

"Mulder?" She said softly.

"Mmm," I answered, not lifting my lips from her skin.

"I want you to take your shirt off."

My shirt and sweater were off in one swift move, sailing across
the room and finally sliding along my hardwood floor.

"Better?" I asked.

"Yes, but I would have liked to have helped you," she pouted.

Her pout was my undoing. I was no longer in control. I crushed
her mouth with mine, pushing her onto her back. As I was fumbling
with her remaining buttons, I could feel her hands working on my
pants. When her sweater was taken care of, I moved to her pants
and removed them swiftly. Scully had managed to get my pants to
my knees. I had to break our kiss to remove them all the way, then
I added my boxers to the clothes that were now scattered across
the living room.

When I turned back to Scully, she was lying on my couch in her
black bra and panties, her red hair fanned out behind her. I have
no memory of how I removed those last two articles of her
clothing. The next thing I knew I was inside of her, my mouth
devouring hers again. She was so tight that I thought I might be
hurting her, but her hands were on my ass urging me deeper.

As soon I had managed to bury myself inside of her completely, I
withdrew and plunged back into her. She rose to meet my thrust
and we both moaned when our bodies collided. I picked up my pace
and she matched my every stroke. Soon I was thrusting into her
with abandon, lost in the sensation of finally being inside of her.

My orgasm overtook me quickly in a blinding white hot wave. When
I floated back down to reality, I felt Scully trembling
underneath me.

"Scully, I'm so sorry. I didn't mean to hurt you. I lost
control..."

"Mulder, shh," she tried to catch the hot tears that were running
down my face. "You didn't hurt me, quite the opposite, in fact,"
she chuckled, her voice still husky.

"Then why are you shaking?" I was confused.

"I call it aftershocks, Mulder."

"You came?" I said in disbelief.

"Yes, Mulder, I came," she laughed. "Why do you sound so
surprised?"

"Um, I thought it would take a little more on my part," I
explained.

"Sometimes it will, but you had me most of the way there when you
offered to cook for me this morning," she chuckled.

Heaving a huge sigh of relief, I kissed her tenderly. "You'll
let me know If I ever do anything that does hurt you?"

"Of course, I will, Mulder, but it'll take a lot more then
energetic sex."

"That's about as energetic as I get," I told her as I nuzzled her
neck.

"Then you don't have anything to worry about," she said softly in
my ear, "And I love you, too, Mulder."

"Too?"

"You told me over and over when we were making love," she
explained.

"I do, Scully, I can't even begin to tell you how much."

Grabbing the blanket off of the back of the couch, Scully wrapped
it around us. "You don't have to tell me, Mulder, you show me all
the time," she tried to stifle a yawn. "Let's have a little nap,
and then we move to the bed. Maybe then you'll be able to witness
one of my orgasms."

I kissed her softly again before re-adjusting our bodies so
that we were spooning. As I laid there with Scully cradled in
my arms, my mind was already imagining her in the throes of an
orgasm in my bed. Usually images like that would have kept me
awake for hours, but the affects of my powerful orgasm won out,
and I drifted off to sleep.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Shortly after one the following afternoon, Kimberly called the
office to tell me that Skinner wanted to see Scully and me
immediately about a new case.
"Good afternoon, Agent Scully, Agent Mulder," Kimberly said
brightly when we walked into the office.
"Good afternoon, Kimberly," Scully replied pleasantly.
"Go right in," Kimberly nodded towards the door.
"Thanks, I smiled.
As I was about to close the door behind us, I heard Kimberly call
me back. I poked my head out of the door.
"I see the lemon chicken worked," she grinned unabashedly at me.
"It worked on Skinner, too," she whispered with a wink and then
laughed at what must have been a look of shock on my face.
