My eyes were only half open as I stumbled to the bathroom and

already closing again as I found my way, by memory, back to my

bed. I discovered it was still warm under the covers as I

snuggled into my pillow. I was almost completely asleep again

when I felt an arm wrap around my waist and pull me close. Before

I had time to panic some part of my brain recognized Mulder's

scent.

Mulder -- I'd forgotten -- I was supposed to be on the couch.

When the men had come to fix the damage done by his waterbed

they'd discovered that the hardwood under his carpeting would

have to be replaced. Consequently Mulder's living room was full

of his bedroom furniture. When he'd taken the call at the office

I'd been able to tell by his side of the conversation what was

going on. I'd also been able to see him trying to figure out what

he was going to do. If it was me, I'd go to my mother's. Mulder

didn't have that option; although if he'd asked, my mother would

have taken him in.

"I guess I'm spending another night or two in a motel," he'd

sighed when he hung up the phone.

We spent so much time out of town we both relished the time we

got to spend in our own beds.

"I'm sure the guys would happily take you in," I'd suggested.

"You don't see them as much as you used to."

"I'm sure they would, Scully," he'd nodded, "but I slept there

once, when I'd had way too much Corona to drive. As drunk as I

was, I could still tell that 'the guys' rarely, if ever, change

their sheets. A hotel will be fine."

He'd chuckled when I wrinkled my nose.

"I just changed my sheets yesterday," I'd offered.

"How does putting you out of your bed solve anything?"

"I'll sleep on my couch," I'd shrugged.

"Scully..." Mulder had started to object.

"You aren't going to argue with me about sleeping on my couch

are you?" I'd raised an eyebrow. "I have a habit of falling

asleep on my couch too." He'd taken a breath to say something but

I kept going. "And don't even suggest that you'll take the couch,

Mulder, you'd have to fold up like an accordion."

"Well..."

"I won't take no for an answer."

"Okay," he'd raised his eyebrows in surprise.

He wasn't used to me being so forceful. If the truth was to be

told, I'd shocked myself. I wasn't sure where that had all come

from, but once I'd started, I couldn't stop. It was almost like

something else had been controlling my mouth. Although it was

more likely that all of the manners my mother had drilled into

me surfaced of their own accord. I don't think she'd ever

envisioned those manners landing me in this situation.

Lying there, with Mulder's arm around my waist, I tried to

decide what to do. If I attempted to slide out of the bed, I'd

wake him up. I'd be so embarrassed if he found me in bed with him.

I considered laying there until he rolled over and then I'd be able

to sneak out of the bed, but then I worried about falling asleep.

Mulder might wake up before me.

I was trying to come up with a better alternative when Mulder

burrowed his nose into my hair and made an 'mmm' sound deep in

his throat. I was starting to wish that he would wake up and

realize what he was doing. I was sure he had no idea. I had

resolved to wake him up when I felt his lips against my neck.

Before I could stop myself, my hips had bucked in response to

his touch. He made that contented sound again and slipped his

hand under my pajama top. My head was spinning, I wanted to say

something, but the only sound that came out of my mouth was a

sigh.

With his lips assaulting my neck and his hand squeezing my

breast, I was soon panting and writhing. There was no longer

any doubt in my mind; Mulder wasn't asleep. He knew what he was

doing and he was very good at it. After pulling me onto to my

back, his mouth descended onto mine; his tongue in my mouth.

I didn't stop him, if anything, I encouraged him. My hands went

to his face and cradled him as we continued our lusty kiss. His

hand wasn't idle. After caressing me, he tugged on my nipple,

making me moan into his mouth. Then his hand eased down my

belly and my hips came up off the sheet to meet him.

When Mulder's fingers slipped into my pajama bottoms and grazed

my clit, he found out how ready I was for him. After that

everything was a blur. I'm not sure which one of us took my

pajamas off, but I was naked. Mulder's boxers were no longer in

the vicinity either. I don't think our lips had parted for more

than a few seconds. He was above me and inside of me. My hands

were on his ass, urging him deeper. As he began to thrust we

had to break our kiss. I heard myself making the most unrefined

grunts and groans. I couldn't ever remember uttering sounds like

that before.

Mulder was none too quiet himself. Neither of us spoke words, but

the pitch of our vocalizations increased as we neared our

climaxes. I came first, quaking around him. With his last few

powerful strokes, he prolonged my orgasm. I was still quivering

when he shuddered and called my name. It was the first word that

had been spoken since I mistakenly crawled into bed with him.

When he stopped shaking, he leaned in and kissed me tenderly.

Then he eased himself out of me and rolled to his side. Soon

he had me pulled close to him again.

"Scully," he breathed into my ear. "You have no idea how long

I've been waiting for some kind of sign from you. Of course, I

wasn't expecting you to crawl into bed with me," he chuckled.

I hoped I didn't tense in his arms. I didn't know what to say.

Would he be offended if I told him the truth? But how could I

start lying to him now? That would not have been an auspicious

way to begin what I hoped would be an ongoing aspect of our

relationship.

"Mulder?"

"Mmm hmm."

"I forgot you were in the bed."

"What?" His voice rose an octave and he tensed noticeably behind

me. "Why didn't you stop me?"

"I didn't want you to stop," I told him quietly.

I felt the tension drain out of his body, but he said nothing

for a moment.

"I'm confused," he finally sighed.

"Part of me has wanted this for a very long time, Mulder."

"And the other part?" His voice was unsteady, like he wasn't

sure if he wanted to hear my answer.

"The other part kept reminding me that I didn't do well when it

came to relationships with the men I worked with."

"You're afraid this might change things between us?"

"How can it not, Mulder? This will certainly change things, but

change isn't always bad."

"It's a change I've been looking forward to for years," Mulder's

nose was back in my hair. "So you're okay with this?"

"Ignoring my feelings wasn't working out well," I pointed out.

"I'm surprised you lasted this long. You had me wrapped around

your little finger a long time ago." He was gently caressing my

thigh.

"I was sure if I waited long enough, you'd find someone else."

"Then why'd you get so damn jealous every time another woman

even looked at me?"

"Was I that obvious?"

"Only to a trained professional," he assured me.

"Then how did you notice?" I kept my voice even.

"Because, Scully," he ignored my dig, "you happen to be the

biggest X-File out there. It was one case I wasn't going to

let go. I figured my good looks and world-renowned charm would

wear you down eventually."

"I think the biggest X-File out there is why I ever fell in love

with you in the first place," I replied dryly.

"Because I'm irresistible?"

"That must be it," I snickered.

"Or maybe because it's I must have the patience of a saint to

put up with all your second-guessing."

"Look, Mulder," I turned in his arms, but before I could continue

he put a finger to my lips.

"Or maybe it's because, here," he moved his hand to cover my heart,

"you know that I have never loved anyone the way I love you. I

think you've always known -- *I've* always known. I've never told

anyone this before, Scully, but when you walked into my office,

I knew."

"How could you have known?"

"Because you'd been visiting me in my dreams since I was kid.

I saw you grow from a curly-headed sprite into a heart stopping

beauty. I'd always thought you were my guardian angel or

something, but then there you were in the flesh."

"Mulder..."

"I knew you wouldn't believe me," the disappointment was evident

in his voice.

"I believe you, Mulder. I have no doubt at all." I wondered if he

noticed that I was trembling all over.

"Why do you believe me all of a sudden?" I'd never heard Mulder

more astounded.

I tried to steady my voice, "You know my tendency toward -- well

-- premonitory dreams..."

Author's notes: My husband told me that he knew I was the

one because he'd seen me in his dreams. At that point I

think I was dreaming Tom Hanks. Hey, we aren't M&S :)
